Case closed?
The JonBenet Ramsey case is one of the most infamous unsolved mysteries of all time. The 6-year old child beauty queen was murdered on Christmas Day in 1996 at her home in Boulder, Colorado, and since then the country has been obsessed with trying to find the child’s murderer.
Obviously there was a lot of suspicion surrounding her parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, after her body was found in a room in the basement of the house by her father after police responded to reports of a kidnapping. And a ransom note that was left at the scene, written on a notepad that belonged to the Ramseys, was suspected to have been written by Patsy Ramsey.
There have also been theories that JonBenet was accidentally killed by her brother, Burke Ramsey, and her parents helped cover for their son. But to this day, nobody has been held responsible for the child’s death and it seems that authorities are no closer than they were nearly 30 years ago to determining who killed JonBenet Ramsey.
One theory, though, is that JonBenet isn’t really dead. And not only is she still alive, but she’s been hiding in plain sight as an international pop superstar.
The wild conspiracy theory that Katy Perry is, in fact, JonBenet Ramsey has been floating around the internet for years. As the theory goes, John and Patsy Ramsey somehow faked their daughter’s death so that she could become famous (I’m not sure how that would work – seems like there are a few steps missing from that logic) and that the 40-year old Katy Perry is actually the now-34 year old JonBenet Ramsey.
Makes total sense, right?
Like I said, the theory requires you to believe quite a few assumptions, and the only real evidence is that Perry bears a passing resemblance to the murdered child beauty queen. But the internet did what the internet does, and has ran with it (although it seems to mostly be a joke) over the past few years.
And now it seems like Katy Perry herself might be buying into the theory…
An Instagram user shared an AI-generated video in which JonBenet Ramsey turns into Perry, captioning it “iykyk,” or “if you know, you know.”
And Perry herself commented on the video:
“wait am i”
I dunno Katy, you tell us…
Of course the fact that Katy even responded to the conspiracy theory set the internet on fire:
“this is my roman empire”
“Just found a new rabbit hole. See yall in a week.”
“Favorite conspiracy theory EVER”
“show us your birth certificate sis!”
There’s also another problem with the theory: There are photos out there of Katy as a child, meaning that if Katy is JonBenet, what happened to this other kid who they’re claiming was Katy?
See how this all falls apart?
Now, I love a good conspiracy theory as much as the next person, but unfortunately I think the truth about what happened to JonBenet is far more horrific than growing up to become some pop star. And hopefully one day we’ll get to learn the truth – and put to rest the theory that she’s Katy Perry.
