Would NASCAR look a little different if Dale Jr. had his way with it?
The race car driver and broadcaster recently sat down with Taylor Lewan and Will Compton – of the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast – and the over three-hour conversation covered a lot of ground. Whether it was Dale Jr. talking about driving for Budweiser, or what the beloved NASCAR driver did if he ever had to go to the bathroom during a race, it was an interview that had racing written all over it (understandably so).
And the most interesting portion was when Dale Jr. was asked if there were NASCAR rules that he would prefer to see fixed. It was such a good question from Compton that Dale initially answered with one word… almost instinctively:
“Sh*t.”
Was that “I better hold my punches” profanity? Or was it “So many things just came to mind, what should I go with” profanity? It’s honestly tough to say, but after Dale Jr. gathered his thoughts, he finally spilled the beans on his preferences for rules of racing, and it just so happened to include two of NASCAR’s most famous racetracks:
“I wish we could figure out a new package for the Daytona and Talladega racetracks. I’d probably work on the rules that affect how the cars race at those two places: Daytona and Talladega.”
In Dale Jr’s mind, the racing aesthetics could be (and used to be) better at NASCAR’s biggest races.
Earnhardt Jr. detailed why he felt that way – especially now as a team owner – and why casual racing fans probably can’t see the problems that he can:
“So we go to the Daytona 500 and the cars, the way the race is sort of… the way you watch the race, some of the details of how the cars race and why they do some of the things they do… it’s not as great as it used to be. It could be better than what it is today. I don’t know the answer to the specific, technical thing that needs to change, but I would love to be in the process of how we can make the cars do different than how they do there and how they race together.”
Guess us casual racing fans will just have to take Dale Jr’s word for it?
And after that spiel, it really seemed as though Dale Jr. was going to tee off on NASCAR with another potential rule change. Instead, the broadcaster and former driver (who still races from time to time) praised the stock car auto racing association:
“I’ll be honest man. Racing right now… no bullsh*t, I’m a critic of the sport. I hold them accountable. When I leave, I know what’s right. But things are really good right now. Things are really, really good. We ran Daytona, and I was there. We had a car in the race. I was really frustrated with the way the cars raced and the on-track product.
I was frustrated with it… a casual fan would have watched the race and not seen the things that I saw that bothered me. I saw things and I was like, ‘I wish they would fix this sh*t.’ Everything from that moment on, the races we have ran, have been spectacular.”
Typically, you don’t hear “I’ll be honest” followed by a compliment.
I supposed Dale Earnhardt Jr. likes to keep everyone on their toes, and you can hear more from him in the conversation he shared on Bussin’ With The Boys:
