Morgan Spurlock Super Size Me

Remember when you could Super Size your meals at McDonald's? For a lot of people reading this you probably don't, and that's thanks to documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock. Back in 2004, the West Virginia native released his documentary Super Size Me, which followed his month long journey of eating nothing but McDonald's for 3 meals a day to see what kind of impact it had on his health. Spoiler alert, it wasn't great for him. The documentary became a massive rallying cry for changes in the way we eat, sounding the warning on obesity in America and even leading to McDonald's doing away with their Super Size options justs six weeks after the movie premiered. Morgan went to my high school, so I think we ended up watching his movie in every class the year it came out...and honestly all it did was make me crave McDonald's and get excited when our driver's ed teacher would let us pick up lunch from the Golden Arches while we were out. But regardless, it's hard to deny the impact that the movie had when it was released. Unfortunately, it was announced today that Morgan Spurlock passed away yesterday at the age of 53 from complications due to cancer. His family announced his death in a statement issued by his brother Craig Spurlock “It was a sad day, as we said goodbye to my brother Morgan. Morgan gave so much through his art, ideas, and generosity. The world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. I am so proud to have worked together with him.” In addition to Super Size Me, Morgan also produced Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!, which took another look at the fast food industry and its attempts to rebrand itself as "healthier." And in 2008, he released Where In The World Is Osama Bin Laden?, which ended with Spurlock theorizing that the terrorist was hiding out in Abbottabad, Pakistan - where he would be found three years later. Back in 2005, Spurlock also debuted his 30 Days television series on FX, which took his concept from Super Size Me of spending 30 days living a particular lifestyle and applied it to other concepts, such as living on minimum wage or binge drinking. The show ran for three seasons before ending in 2008. Spurlock is survived by his two children, Laken and Kallen, as well as his parents and two siblings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=as2zMlxeOkw
