Eagle-Eyed ‘1923’ Fans Notice That Whitfield’s Mansion Is The Same House As The Governor’s Mansion In ‘Yellowstone’

You’ve got to wake up pretty early in the morning to get something past Yellowstone and 1923 fans.

1923 is currently in the middle of its second and final season. Depending on who you ask, 1923 only running for two seasons can be seen as both a good thing and a bad thing. For one, Taylor Sheridan isn’t trying to stretch out the story any longer than he has to… which is ironic, because one of the chief complaint’s from Season 2 thus far is that it’s moved at a snail’s pace.

If you are weary of spoilers, I might watch the fourth episode of Season 2 first before you read on. You’ve already seen that episode? Perfect, then feel free to keep on reading…

Episode 4 of this current season focused in on Donald Whitfield, who is played by Timothy Dalton. Whitfield brought to light plans of building a winter resort and an airport on the land that’s owned by Jacob Dutton (played by Harrison Ford). And because Donald Whitfield has played such a big role in the second season – trying to commercialize the Dutton Ranch and what not – many scenes have been set at the wealthy character’s home. And that home might look very familiar for fans of shows within the Yellowstone universe.

While it was featured at night in season 2 Episode 4, here’s a clearer, daytime shot from back in Season 1:

1923 house

In case you didn’t realize, it’s the same exact home that John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) was found dead in to kick things off in the second part of Yellowstone’s final season.

When Costner’s character was living in it, it was referred to as the Governor’s mansion, because Dutton was acting as the governor of Montana when he was killed.

Yellowstone mansion

And no, this isn’t some kind of easter egg where Whitfield’s mansion would go on to become the Governor’s Mansion in the modern-day Dutton story, it’s just a matter of production convenience. We need two big houses for 2 different shows… let’s just contract with the same one. How do I know that? Because Whitfield lives in Bozeman, Montana, in 1923, which is also near the Dutton Ranch. The Governor’s Mansion is Helena, Montana, which of course is the state capital.

So while it’s not fair to call it a production gaffe, fans across the internet did notice it. But then again, Taylor Sheridan likes to use a lot of the same actors in many of his shows, I suppose the same goes for properties.

Daly Mansion

In real life, that home is actually called the Daly Mansion in Hamilton, Montana. It’s a 50-plus-room, 24,000 square foot home that was owned by the late-19th- and early-20th-century copper baron Marcus Daly. The residence has now been turned into a museum… and obviously used in such shows as 1923 and Yellowstone. The Victorian estate can be visited if you were a fan of the show and were in the Hamilton, Montana area.

And Hamilton isn’t the only place in Montana where you can go see some of the on-location sites that Yellowstone and 1923 filmed in. Anaconda, Butte, Deer Lodge, Dillon, Hamilton, Park City, Pony, Valier and Whitehall were all used in the making of 1923 (Spencer Dutton’s storyline was shot almost entirely in Africa).

As for Yellowstone, the towns and cities of Darby, Hamilton and Billings were all utilized, along with Park City, Utah.
