These MLB Overlap hats are… something.
Every year, Major League Baseball rolls out some new, specialty hats in hopes that fanbases will buy them. If a baseball fan already has their team’s cap, they’ll probably just keep wearing that one. But if their favorite teams releases something “fresh,” they just might pony up and buy another.
That’s why these New Era “Overlap” hats – which puts each team’s logo right over the top of the team’s name – exist. And this is one of those things where it just makes zero sense how it got past quality and design checks, and I can assure you that it is 100 percent real.
The Texas Rangers overlap hat has gone viral, and it’s pretty obvious why:
I can’t get over how hilarious that is. How do you not realize that you are putting out a hat with the Spanish word for “tits” plastered front and center on it?
As I mentioned earlier, the hat is real and was listed on the MLB Shop website for quite some time. It was then briefly marked as “Sold Out,” and it’s not clear if that’s truly because people bought all of them up, or if the storefront finally realized their mistake and pulled the hat. Now, when you click on the link for the Texas Rangers “Tetas” hat, it just takes you back to the homepage when you try to reach the product on the storefront.
Every other MLB team’s overlap hat is still available for purchase, and there are a couple of others that barely missed out on being controversial. The Houston Astros reads “Ashos,” which still sounds a bit problematic if you ask me. And the Los Angeles Angels were WAY TOO CLOSE for comfort, with their overlap hat reading “Anaels.”
Come to think of it, these hats don’t make a lot of sense in the first place considering most team logos are just one letter from the team’s name. Only a few of these are halfway decent… Blue Jays, Orioles, but even those I wouldn’t buy.
Regardless, one could argue that the overlap hats have been a success, only because they accidentally created a viral moment that everyone is talking about on social media:
“Copping a Tetas Texas Rangers hat for the love of the game.”
“A Tetas hat is insane.”
“The Texas Rangers Tetas hat might turn some heads.”
“Guy who loves the Texas Rangers and big melons: ‘If only I could find a hat that combines my passions.'”
“Tetas sells.”
“As a Rangers fan, I couldn’t be more in love with the TETAS hat.”
“I’m buying all available stock of the TETAS hat.”
“Everything’s bigger in Texas, right?”
And this is all a little reminiscent of when the Oakland Athletics accidentally released a hat that had the word “Ass” written front and center. Seems like the MLB has all of their bases covered with their “Tetas” and “Ass” hats, am I right?
And it also seems as though the quality control department of the MLB’s merchandise could use some retooling after yet another hat snafu…
