The prospects of Stephen A. Smith running for president in 2028 is gaining momentum.
The sports personality stays very busy nowadays, starting off his day with First Take and then recording his personal, non-ESPN-affiliated Stephen A. Smith Show in the afternoons. He also helps hosts too many other shows on ESPN to count, and can still apparently find time to stop in and chat on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
While he was sitting down for the interview, the topic of a potential presidential run came up almost immediately. And to be clear, it’s not the first time that Smith has been asked about politics on a talkshow. Just last year, when he stopped by The View (he evidently likes going on that show because he was just recently on again), the sports personality fielded questions about his interest in running:
“I have said this on many occasions. The answer would be, ‘Hell no.’ Because I like my life. I’m living a pretty good life, but I must confess… I do wish I could debate some of these guys. I’d love to be on a debate stage going up against these guys with the presidency on the line.
I’m half joking but I kind of mean it. I have no desire to be a congressional figure or a senator. But if you came to me and told me I had a legitimate shot to win the presidency of the United States of America, I would definitely consider it.”
And here’s a thing… the numbers are showing that run for Stephen A. Smith in 2028 could be possible.
When the First Take host sat down at the Tonight Show, Fallon kicked off the segment by showing headlines posing “Stephen A. Smith for President,” and asking the question, “Could Stephen A. Smith Save the Democratic Party?” Quick side note: seeing things like that should be eye-opening, but Donald Trump kind of busted down the door of, “You don’t have to be a politician to be president.”
Jimmy Fallon asked Smith how he felt about reading stuff like that, and Stephen A. shot him straight about it:
“Folks are nuts. The Democratic party, they lost, they had a bad few months. We all know this. Even though there’s a lot of qualified Democrats all over the country, from a local perspective – governors, mayors, stuff like that – there’s no real national voice. Enter muah. They’ve come to me.”
Stephen A. Smith isn’t lying either. The Democratic party has legitimately been kicking the tires on him as an option, if only to shake things up a bit.
The sports personality went on to say that he hasn’t asked for any of this, and that he’d have to get an incredible offer and be promised a lot to leave his current gig in sports:
“I did not ask for this. I did not want this. I happen to have a very, very good life. A very good job. I’m good, very good. They want to talk. They even got me in the polls man. I think the (polling) numbers are up to 7.6% or something. I watch these things. And I’m saying, ‘Wait a minute now, I don’t want to do this.’ But the fact that they’re talking about me this way, I must say… I approve this message.”
