Fans Slam The Academy For Leaving Michelle Trachtenberg Out Of Oscars “In Memoriam” Segment: “Absolutely Disgusting”

Really, Oscars?

Last night, the Academy handed out awards to some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, and they also honored the lives and careers of actors and actresses who have passed away with their “In Memoriam” segment — but they left out a very notable name in Michelle Trachtenberg. Also missing from the list were notable actors Shannen Doherty and Marianne Faithfull.

Michelle sadly passed away at the young age of 39, after undergoing a liver transplant sometime recently (an exact date hasn’t been disclosed) prior to her death. Trachtenberg was found unresponsive by her mother in her Manhattan apartment on February 26th, and she was known for appearing in TV and films like EuroTripBuffy the Vampire SlayerGossip Girl, and the Disney movie Ice Princess (my personal favorite).

Trachtenberg was born in New York City on October 11th, 1985, and started acting at a young age, appearing in the classic 90’s Nickelodeon series The Adventures of Pete and Pete, playing Nona F. Mecklenberg. She made her movie debut in 1996, starring in Harriet the Spy.

The “In Memoriam” segment was started with a tribute to the late Gene Hackman, who passed away just last week, as his Unforgiven co-star Morgan Freeman spoke in-depth about their friendship. Gena Rowlands, Shelley Duvall, James Earl Jones, Maggie Smith, Donald Sutherland, David Lynch, James Earl Jones, Teri Garr, Joan Plowright, Louis Gossett Jr., Kris Kristofferson, and Bob Newhart were also part of the segment.

While the portion shown on TV was relatively short, the final cut posted to the Academy’s website featured more stars in Tony Todd, John Ashton, Bernard Hill, Olivia Hussey, Eleanor Coppola, Alain Delon, Morgan Spurlock, Johnny Wactor, Barbara Rush, Martin Mull and Tony Lo Bianco, according to Entertainment Weekly. Even Quincy Jones was also honored in a separate segment, led by The Color Purple stars Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey, which also included a performance by Queen Latifah.

Michelle was missing from all of the tributes, both on TV and otherwise, which is a shame and honestly makes no sense. It’s not like they didn’t have time… they carved out a huge spot for Hackman who sadly passed most recently of everyone on the list (as they should, nothing against that), but left off a pretty famous and very successful actress who has been doing it since she was a child. Just shameful, and there’s no excuse.

Here’s a look at what was shown on TV for “In Memoriam”:

Michelle deserved to be rightfully honored, and fans on X were happy to let the Academy hear it about how it’s “digesting” that she was left out, and I totally agree… they should do better, as they often like to preach to everyone watching at home about whatever their cause of the month is:
