Not making friends, eh?
2024 Cup Series Rookie of the Year, Carson Hocevar, had himself an eventful day at the Ambetter Health 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. He ultimately finished 2nd, and probably had a chance to win if not for a last second caution that gave the win to Christopher Bell. It was a similar scenario to the one we saw at Daytona last week, but in this instance, they didn’t let them race to the checker… caution came out immediately and the race was called for Bell.
Needless to say, NASCAR fans were less than thrilled about the finish…
NASCAR just shot themselves in the foot. That would have been an incredible finish. I’m so fucking mad

Another finish ruined by a caution

Why did they call the yellow so quick. They could have let them race to the checker.

Carson ran fast, but he nearly ran half the field off the road driving like a lunatic. Kyle Busch exploded on him at the end of the first stage:
“Tell that 77 he’s done that same f***ing move 10 times. I don’t care if I wreck the whole f***ing field I’m over him. He’s a f***ing douchebag, I’m gonna wreck his a**.”
I saw the 77 slide the 8 at the end of the stage, causing Kyle Busch to lose several positions.
I went to MAX to watch the replay and caught a classic Kyle Busch rant.

After the race, Kyle was asked about Hocevar, and said the following:
“He just had a lot of, lot of, lot of close calls. I mean, he wasn’t even clear on me, I had to lift, and he put me in the fence off of 2 in the first stage. So, he’s just trying to plug holes, and doing it last second and last minute, and creating log jams on back. It’s just, do it at the end, you know, do it in the last 30 laps, not in the first 230.
He had a fast car and he was doing a lot of moves with it to get himself in position… it’s where we’re all at in today’s age with the cars. We’re all given the same stuff and he’s making a lot of bold move to try and make the most of it.”

Ryan Blaney got spun earlier in the race, and still wound up finishing 4th. After the race, he had words with Hocevar, and according to Blaney, he simply told him to calm it down:
“I just said, ‘Hey, you got to calm down.’ I told him a couple moves he made earlier in the race that were really, really sketchy,. Obviously, me getting spun, h should know better than to hit me in that spot. Like, you can’t just run into my bumper as I’m turning into the corner, I’m gonna wreck.
So, I just told him, ‘You got to calm down. You got a lot of talent, but you got to be a little bit easier in these certain moments and be a little smarter.'”

Here’s a look at Hocevar spinning out the 12 car.

Like I said, Carson finished 2nd, the highest finish of his Cup Series career, and sounded like he had a few things to “clean up,” but ultimately wasn’t trying to apologize for racing hard.
Kinda sounds like Ross Chastain in 2023.
