As I began writing this blog, I read a comment: “The older you get, the more invisible you become.” And as I write this on my birthday, I’m not sure I entirely believe that statement…
Sure, growing old has its cons, but it also comes with gaining wisdom, a deeper meaning of love, and a greater appreciation for life. Although I am still quite a few decades from reaching this man’s age (God willing), once you reach these golden years, those around you will hopefully appreciate your story and have immense respect for you—and wholesome moments like this occur. Of course, you’d think that’s how it should be, but it’s not always the case…
Recently, a Cracker Barrel near Flagstaff, Arizona, gave an elderly man the ultimate birthday gift while he was dining at the Southern home cooking-style restaurant. While the man was dining to celebrate his 89th birthday, the entire restaurant heard it was his birthday and decided to sing him all “Happy Birthday.”
A woman in the restaurant captured the end of the song on camera and shared it on social media, which has now gone viral. In the tender short video, the old man’s shoulders move up and down, sobbing. He’s so moved that the restaurant went out of its way to make him feel special on his birthday.
Given the angle of how the video was shot, it looks like he might have been dining alone, but the creator who shared it made sure to clarify in the comments that he was with a few family members. The creator also spoke to the man and learned that his name is Richard. He is an Army Veteran with Alzheimer’s who sadly lost his wife to cancer in 2015. He eats at Cracker Barrell every day with some other family members.
That makes this moment hit even harder…
“I’m fine… it’s fine.”
The creator commented on the video, noting how this moment choked her up just as much as it choked up the man being sung to.
For all of us softies, this video just wrecked us. While some might get sad from it, I think it shows how many good people are left on this Earth. This is one of the best random acts of kindness I’ve seen in a while.
This man is a hero.

As with many videos highlighting wholesome moments like this, the comments section is filled with folks moved by the moment. However, one comment stands out as the man’s niece left it.
“This is my Uncle!! This made my day.”
Just like it made her day to see her uncle appreciated, I am sure it made this man’s year.
