Should have at least thrown on a Steelers hat.
There have been a number of home invasions targeting high profile athletes over the past few months, prompting the FBI to warn players to up the security back home while they're at their games.
Back in October, the
homes of Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were both burglarized during a Monday Night Football game at Arrowhead Stadium. And in November, thieves hit the home of Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis Jr. while the NBA team was at a game.
Since then, several other players among various leagues, including the NFL, NBA and NHL, have been hit by burglaries while they were at work, including Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic, Dallas Stars center Tyler Seguin, and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.
The FBI issued a warning back in December that athletes' homes are being targeted "due to the perception they may have high-end goods like designer handbags, jewelry, watches, and cash," blaming the string of burglaries on "organized theft groups" from South America that conduct both physical and technical surveillance on the homes, often using social media posts to identify where valuables will be kept and patterns in the athletes' movement.
Of course, they also know when these players are going to be away from home because they can just look up the team's schedule.
According to the FBI:
"These preparation tactics enable theft groups to conduct burglaries in a short amount of time. Organized theft groups bypass alarm systems, use Wi-Fi jammers to block Wi-Fi connections and disable devices, cover security cameras, and obfuscate their identities."
The NFL even issued a warning to its players, cautioning not to post on social media in real-time (though it’s not like their schedule isn’t pretty easy to figure out) and to keep valuables hidden out of plain sight.
But despite the warnings and the increased awareness, unfortunately several athletes have already become victims themselves, including Burrow back in December.
The quarterback wasn't home at the time of the invasion, with the Bengals playing the Dallas Cowboys on at the time, but SI
swimsuit model Olivia Ponton was at Burrow's house when the burglars made entry and called the police during the robbery.
And this past week, an arrest was made in the case after police noticed "suspicious luggage" being carried into a vehicle outside of an Ohio hotel.
Officers pulled over the car and found four Chilean nationals, all of whom were determined to be in the country illegally. The men reportedly showed fake identification, and bodycam footage showed one of the men was even wearing a Cincinnati Bengals hat.
Gotta hide the evidence better than that, dude.
Police searched the car after reportedly smelling marijuana, and in the trunk they found a Louis Vuitton bag containing an LSU shirt and a Bengals hat.
I mean, maybe they're just big fans of Joey B, who led LSU to a national championship in 2019 before being taken by the Bengals with the #1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, but authorities suspect that these items were stolen from Burrow's home.
Officials also found four automatic center punches located in the car's console, tools often used by burglars to break glass and gain entry into a home.
Police ultimately arrested the four illegal immigrants, and while they were at the sheriff's office, detectives called a phone number that had been placed at the scene of the burglary using cell phone data - and one of the suspect's phones began ringing.
While criminal documents don't specifically mention the Burrow break-in, Alexander Chavez, Bastian Morales, Jordan Sanchez and Sergio Cabello were charged with participating in a criminal gang, engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, obstructing official business, and possession of criminal tools.
And not to give them any advice, buy maybe next time, take off the merch you stole during the robbery when you get pulled over.
