The arrest heard round the golf world.
While you were sleeping yesterday, the number one golfer in the world was getting arrested. Scottie Scheffler, one of the most likeable professional golfers on the planet, got into quite the predicament early Friday.
An apparent traffic misunderstanding with the police led to Scheffler getting pulled out of the vehicle he was driving and put into the back of a cop car. It was a bizarre incident, and resulted in social media sending out a flurry of jokes and memes.
The only information we had from the incident initially was provided by the video that was taken and posted by ESPN's Jeff Darlington. It was telling, and seemed to paint the picture that it was all a misunderstanding. However, it didn't appear to be that way when the police report from the Louisville PD came out.
It went into detail about the officer (Detective Gillis) that arrested Scheffler and the incident that led to that. Pay close attention to the very last line:
"Detective Gillis was directing traffic into Gate 1 of the Valhalla Golf Course due to the road being closed in both directions from an earlier fatal collision. Listed subject was driving eastbound to gain access to the course. Subject pulled into the westbound lanes, where outbound traffic was flowing and to avoid backed up traffic. Detective Gillis was in the middle of the westbound lanes, in full LMPD uniform and a hi-visibility yellow reflective rain jacket.
Detective Gillis stopped subject and attempted to give instructions. Subject refused to comply and accelerated forward, dragging Detective Gillis to the ground. Detective Gillis suffered pain, swelling, and abrasions to his left wrist and knee. He was transported to the hospital for further medical treatment by emergency medical personnel. Detective Gillis' uniform pants, valued at approximately $80 were damaged beyond repair"
Poor guy lost his lucky, traffic-directing pants! Gillis has apparently been with the Louisville Police since 2007, and like the other officers that were positioned outside of Valhalla Golf Club for the PGA Championship early Friday morning, he's apparently never seen or heard of Scottie Scheffler. He's reportedly hospitalized because of the "dragging" incident. It was a hectic morning for the world's number one player, who got detained and still somehow managed to make it back to the golf course for his tee time. Somewhere along the way, he also took time to put together this statement on the situation and his arrest: "This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today. Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective."From the Scottie Scheffler police report: the arresting officer, Bryan Gillis, says that Scheffler disobeyed his orders and then dragged him to the ground with his car causing injuries to the officer and his clothing. pic.twitter.com/oh5eOT0ZuY
