Nashville Locals Threaten To Move After Tennessee Lawmaker Introduces Bill To Name Airport After Donald Trump

Nashville International Airport BNA

Bachelorettes going to be flying into Trump International Airport soon? A Tennessee lawmaker has introduced a proposal to rename Nashville International Airport after our 47th president, and it's got a lot of people up in arms. State representative Todd Warner (who is from Chapel Hill, Tennessee, which is about an hour from Nashville) filed a bill this week to rename the Nashville airport after President Donald Trump ahead of the presidential inauguration on Monday. Now, right off the bat, I'm not really sure...well, why. Trump doesn't have any connection to Tennessee, so it's clearly just a political stunt. The airport was first established in 1937 as Berry Field, which was named after Col. Harry S. Berry, the Tennessee administrator for the Works Progress Administration under the New Deal. While it's now just called Nashville International Airport, the airport code BNA is still used from its days as Berry Field. And while Tennessee voted for Trump in the past three presidential elections, with the incoming president winning the state with 64% of the vote over Vice President Kamala Harris, the capital city isn't exactly Trump territory. Harris won Davidson County, which contains all of Nashville, with nearly 63% of the vote. So as you can imagine, the proposal to rename the airport after Donald Trump isn't sitting well with a lot of people in Nashville, who have taken to the internet to voice their displeasure at the thought of having to fly out of Trump International Airport - and many vowing to move if the proposal does in fact go through. Over on Reddit (which is pretty much a liberal wasteland anyway), the meltdown is on full display: "I’ve been thinking of moving away from this backwater, this is one more reason." "Trashville staying true to their name!" "I’m moving" "If this for some reason actually happens, I'm quitting my job here" "I will drive to Chattanooga, pay for airport parking, and likely have more stops to my final destination just to avoid supporting Donald Trump International Airport." "Well that’s one way to get me to take the move I’ve been contemplating more seriously" And the commenters over on Facebook are similarly outraged: "I will no longer use the airport" "I'll make sure to never connect here for any future flights!" "If so, I will drive to Atlanta to fly." "If that happens I will never ever fly into Nashville again" Now I'll admit, the idea of fewer people to deal with when I fly in and out of BNA is appealing. But I have a feeling this isn't going to happen. The airport is controlled by the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority, which is controlled by the city and not the state. Not to mention, I have a feeling that if you changed the signage at BNA to put Trump's name on it, you're just setting up an easy target for vandalism from people who just can't control themselves. But people did have other suggestions for names that Nashville should consider if they want to rename the airport, with most people suggesting Tennessee native and country star Dolly Parton. But my personal favorite suggestion was former Nashville mayor and Tennessee Congressman Bill Boner. Imagine all the bachelor and bachelorette parties having to fly into Boner Airport.
