Ellen DeGeneres Returns To The United States Two Months After Reportedly “Leaving For Good” Because Donald Trump Was Elected President

Ellen DeGeneres

Back before he's even inaugurated. For the past three elections, we've heard plenty of celebrities claim they were going to leave the United States if Donald Trump gets elected. Spoiler alert: They never do. Ahead of the 2024 election, celebrities like Cher, Barbra Streisand, Whoopi Goldberg and Cardi B all talked about leaving the United States if Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris. And, well, we all know what happened in the election...and they're all still here. In fact the only one who actually left was Ellen DeGeneres, the disgraced talk show host who retired after accusations of bullying and creating a hostile work environment for her employees and guests. After Trump was elected, it was reported that Ellen and her wife, Portia de Rossi, had left their Montecito, California home and relocated to the Cotswolds in England. According to TMZ, the couple decided to "get the hell out" of the United States after Trump was declared the winner of the 2024 presidential election after becoming "disillusioned" with the country. DeGeneres had donated to Harris and publicly endorsed her for president: https://www.instagram.com/p/C-_1EZcxtj0/ The couple reportedly began house shopping in England back in October, and officially made the move not long after Trump was elected. But it's already been a rough start over there, after their neighborhood was hit by severe flooding last month. Apparently moving from sunny California to the rainy English countryside has its problems too... Sources have claimed that the couple vowed to "never come back" to the United States, and they have reportedly planned to list their Montecito home for sale after previously selling another mansion in the area for $96 million earlier this year. But apparently things have already changed. Earlier this week, DeGeneres was spotted out and about in Montecito, just two months after reportedly leaving the country for good. Just can't stay away, eh? The former talk show host looked almost unrecognizable, showing off a new gray hairstyle that had some people mistaking her for Bill Gates. https://twitter.com/aWill1875/status/1879247822559826373 DeGeneres has also vowed that she'll never return to the entertainment industry, joking about her bullying accusations during her latest Netflix special: "I got kicked out of show business. You can't be mean and be in show business. No, they'll kick you out. No mean people in show business." And she also told a crowd during a stand-up special that after her Netflix special, we would never hear from her again: “This is the last time you’re going to see me. After my Netflix special, I’m done.” Probably a good thing after the accusations against her. "Being mean" is putting it mildly, if the stories from her former employees are to be believed. And Ellen herself apologized in an email to her staff, though she seemingly blamed management for the environment by claiming that she "wasn't able to stay on top of everything" as the show grew: "On day one of our show, I told everyone in our first meeting that ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ would be a place of happiness – no one would ever raise their voice, and everyone would be treated with respect. Obviously, something changed, and I am disappointed to learn that this has not been the case. And for that, I am sorry. Anyone who knows me knows it’s the opposite of what I believe and what I hoped for our show... Alongside Warner Bros, we immediately began an internal investigation and we are taking steps, together, to correct the issues. As we’ve grown exponentially, I’ve not been able to stay on top of everything and relied on others to do their jobs as they knew I’d want them done. Clearly some didn’t. That will now change and I’m committed to ensuring this does not happen again." Of course we don't know if she's returning for good, or just back for a quick visit. But apparently she couldn't even make it to the inauguration before returning to the country that she reportedly was leaving for good. Oh well, maybe in 2028.
