Scottie Scheffler

Well, you don't see that very often. While en route to Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, KY early this morning, to prepare for his second round at the 106th addition of the PGA Championship, the world's top ranked golfer was detained by police, handcuffed, and thrown into the back of a cop car outside of the club's entrance. What several media outlets are reporting as a traffic misunderstanding between Scheffler and the authorities, who didn't seem to recognize him, comes in the tragic aftermath of a fatal incident hours prior in which a shuttle struck and killed a pedestrian near the entrance to Valhalla Golf Club, delaying tee times at the tournament this morning while being sorted out. Scheffler allegedly drove over a median in an effort to bypass the traffic around the scene of the incident, and a shortly thereafter, a nearby police officer stopped him, forcefully removed him from his vehicle, and handcuffed him while stunned onlookers and media crews watched. ESPN correspondent Jeff Darlington reportedly tried to intervene before being told by the officer that Scheffler would be heading to jail. A massive, and perhaps costly misunderstanding it sounds like, in the wake of a much more tragic incident outside of the grounds earlier in the morning, it sounds like Scheffler has since been released by authorities, but it is still unclear whether he will be able to make his 10:08am tee time and continue to compete in this year's PGA Championship. Coming off of a two week break since his win at Hilton Head's RBC Heritage tournament, Scheffler and wife Meredith welcomed their first child, Bennett Scheffler. And he came back with a solid first round of 67, in which Scheffler quickly made it apparent that fatherhood hasn't impacted his game yet as he holed out from 167 yards for eagle on the first hole. After day 1 action, Scheffler finds himself tied for 12th place and five strokes off of leader Xander Schauffele. Currently in the midst of one of the most dominant stretches of professional golf ever, after having won four of his five previous tournaments (2nd place in the fifth), including his second victory at the Masters Tournament last month, Scottie Scheffler was the clear cut favorite heading into this week's tournament. I guess we'll have to wait and see whether he makes his tee-time...
