No, Butterball Did Not Issue A Recall Because Workers Were Having Sex With The Turkeys

Butterball turkey

Gives a whole new meaning to stuffing the turkey. Thanksgiving is just two days away, and if you don't already have your turkey thawing in the refrigerator...well, you're behind. And speaking of getting behind the turkey, rumors have been floating around that turkey giant Butterball has issued a recall on their turkeys after employees of the farms were caught having sex with the animals. Yes, you read that right. All over social media, people are freaking out because they're afraid their Thanksgiving turkey might have more than the animal's giblets inside of it this year. https://twitter.com/brittttttanyyy/status/1861100742825668613 https://twitter.com/IrishHoneyDip/status/1861452899919777895 https://twitter.com/suninvirggo/status/1861145071757807930 https://twitter.com/lextaliones_/status/1861061315147526585 And on TikTok, plenty of people are making jokes about the special sauce inside the turkey:

The only problem is...it's not true. (Well, at least the recall part. I don't know what the workers are doing to the turkeys before they get to my kitchen but I choose to believe that part's not true either). It all started over a resurfaced video in which an undercover PETA activist alleged that they caught employees abusing turkeys at a plant in Arkansas. The video was originally taken in 2006, but PETA decided to re-share it this year because...well, the same reason behind everything they do: Shock value. In the video, which I'm not going to repost for obvious reasons but you can easily find if you want to watch, the PETA investigator claimed that a worker had inserted his finger into a turkey's vagina "for fun," while another employee had "humped" a bird that was chained up. Obviously the allegations are extremely disturbing, but in a statement to the New York Post, Butterball clarified that the video was taken nearly 20 years ago and before Butterball became the only turkey company in the United States that was certified as "American Humane." "We are aware of a video from nearly 20 years ago, which is being re-shared across social media. This video is not current and was taken prior to Butterball becoming a private company and prior to our engagement and certification through American Humane. Animal care and well-being is central to who we are as a company, and we are committed to the ethical and responsible care of our flocks. Eleven years ago, Butterball was the first, and remains the only, turkey company to be American Humane certified. That means we have yearly audits conducted by a third party to ensure compliance with our 200+ science-based standards of best practice for care of turkeys, well exceeding industry best practices. We are proud of this designation that no other turkey company can claim and have a zero-tolerance policy for animal mistreatment." Both the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) also confirm that there are no active recalls on Butterball turkeys this Thanksgiving season. So rest assured, if you're serving Butterball to your family, the only meat inside of it should be the neck and giblets.
