Bad blood, or are haters gonna hate?
Ok, now that I've officially exhausted all the Taylor Swift puns I know, sit back and enjoy this story of what happens when Swifties turn on each other.
The pop superstar was in New Orleans this past weekend for a 3-night stop on her
Eras Tour at the Caesars Superdome. And ahead of the show, one fan reserved a staggering 191 hotel rooms in the Crescent City.
Rebecca Fox, a resident of nearby Metairie, Louisiana, reserved the hotel rooms with plans to ensure that they went to fellow Swifties at cost, so they wouldn't have to pay insane markups as it got closer to showtime and as rooms filled up.
But she also decided to organize her own little Swiftie "convention," and planned a whole weekend of activities for those who came to New Orleans for the shows.
Dubbed the "Holiday House" after the singer's $17-million Rhode Island mansion, the unofficial fan gathering promised a weekend filled with activities like talent shows, meals, friendship bracelet making, photo sessions and dance parties.
Fox charged an average of $40 for tickets to these events, though some ranged all the way up to a $150 brunch. According to
NOLA.com, she claims she organized the events in an attempt to cover the cost of the $10,000 food and beverage minimum required to reserve the hotel room block.
She then promoted the events to fellow Swifties on social media, including through a 7,000 member Facebook group set up for the Holiday House.
But when attendees got there, they apparently weren't too happy with what they got for their money.
Numerous TikToks and posts on social media have been making their rounds from Swifties who claim that nobody was checking tickets for the events - meaning that anybody could have walked in and there was no real need to pay for the tickets. There were also complaints that a promised "dance party" didn't have a DJ, and the $150 brunch has been compared to a hotel continental breakfast. (This whole thing is starting to sound like Fyre Fest).
And when fans started voicing their complaints, Fox allegedly became rude and threatening to kick her fellow Swifties out of their hotel rooms. She also refused to provide refunds to fans who had to cancel unless they provided her with tickets to the
Eras Tour, as seen in a post to the Holiday House Facebook group:
Well after the failed Holiday House, fans began demanding refunds for the disappointing event - and Fox has since retained an attorney.
In a statement to NOLA.com, the organizer says that she's not able to comment right now because her attorney's out of the country:
“My attorney is out of the country for two weeks. As badly as I want to be transparent, and share some things that people don’t know, I have to heed his advice and wait to give an official statement until he returns.”
But she also acknowledges that the event fell short of what was promised:
"I know I failed. I’ve admitted I failed."
Other complaints about the event include fans who said they bought tickets to a photo op and instead were given the opportunity to take a picture with a cardboard cutout, and a $65 pool party at the Holiday Inn.
No lawsuits have been filed as of yet, but with Fox lawyering up, I guess we'll have to wait and see how this all turns out.
If you interested in hearing more about it, there's a whole rabbit hole of TikToks you can dive down.
