In the wake of Hurricane Milton's destruction, many have looked to the viral Florida Man affectionately nicknamed Lieutenant Dan as a bizarro beacon of hope. He rode out the natural disaster in his small, tied-up boat as concerned reporters and onlookers across the country alike feared for his safety.
Having
officially survived the hurricane, the man named for Gary Sinise's character in
Forrest Gump continues to generate buzz for his singular antics and quirky personality. Unfortunately, it feels like the tide is starting to turn against him. Lieutenant Dan inked a streaming deal with Kick thanks to his newfound fame, only to
drop a racial slur during his debut.
Now, it appears Lieutenant Dan's daughter is sounding off on the whole situation, implying that everyone who's donated to her father's GoFundMe or facilitated his rise to viral sensation will only enable his self-destructive tendencies.
"Lieutenant Dan was doing just fine without all that money. Y'all TikTok f*****' famous people and all that, y'all blowin' him up and he's gonna be dead before he can even enjoy that boat and stuff. [...] He's high as f**k on all those videos. Is it just weed? Is it just weed? Yes, I'm his f*****g daughter. I'm his daughter, and I've had to keep tabs on that man for 10 years trying to make sure that he's alive.
Now he's going to get all of this, and probably end up dead because of it. [...] I'm really not trying to give it much energy aside from just making sure that he's alive. That's what I try to do. I try to just make sure he's alive and he's good, but y'all are gonna f*****g put him in the grave. Put him in the grave early for making him famous and giving him this money and offering him this s**t.
"[...] You don't know him at all. Nobody actually f*****g cares for him either. Nobody actually cares. Y'all are just using him to make him famous, make yourselves more famous, make yourself look good. But nobody f*****g cares."

It'd be apex modern Internet irony if the woman in this video turned out
not to be Lieutenant Dan's daughter.
However, I'm going to go with my better instincts, cling to some shred of faith in humanity, and assume that she's being truthful here. She certainly comes across as somebody who's concerned about his safety, and like an immediate family member with a big heart. Given Lieutenant Dan's antics and the rather isolated existence he's presented to the public, I could see why his daughter is so distraught about all the exposure he's getting all of a sudden.
Between the aforementioned racial slur and his
40 some-odd mug shots circulating around the Web, I don't think it's a stretch to suggest Lieutenant Dan may not be that great of a dude. Stories like the one his daughter tells in the video do make me think about the state of the Internet in general. It's self-evident that Lieutenant Dan has some issues. Looks like a man who's lived a lot of life in his day and gotten pretty banged-up. His daughter might have a point about the fine line of covering his shenanigans with glee and sort of being exploitative.
Whichever side of that line anyone falls on, there's no question that the vast majority of folks out there are eager for any update on Lieutenant Dan. He brought the attention to himself for better or worse, and he's one of the biggest topics/subjects going. Again, I don't think all the interest in him is mean-spirited, or meant to laugh at him, or meant to enable any bad habits he has. It's more just a strange fascination to see what he'll do next.
But in any event, just wanted to send all the best to Lieutenant Dan's daughter. From what she's saying, she's struggled to maintain a healthy relationship with her father but still cares for him and fears for his well-being. Those aren't circumstances you'd wish on anyone.
