![1883 Star Sam Elliott Can’t Stand Yellowstone: “Too Much Like F***ing ‘Dallas’… Too Much Sh*t”]()
![Sam Elliott 1883 Yellowstone]()
October is here and the return of
Yellowstone is right around the corner. Granted, after a two-year hiatus, and the departure of the series lead, Kevin Costner (John Dutton), a number of
Yellowstone fans have already checked out of the show and won't be tuning in for the series finale.
Season 5 Part 2 is set to premiere on November 10th, but there is someone who definitely won't be tuning in for it... and he's much closer to the show than you'd imagine. I'm talking about
1883 star, Sam Elliott.
Of course, Sam played the role of Shea Brennan for prequel series,
1883, and did a damn fine job doing so. He even won a Screen Actors Guild Award for the performance. But, even though he's a part of the
Yellowstone universe, he can't stand the flagship show.
On an episode of Marc Maron's
WTF Podcast in 2022, he revealed that he doesn't watch
Yellowstone at all. In fact, he even turned
turned down a small role on the show before
1883 came into the picture.
"I'm not a Yellowstone fan, I don't watch Yellowstone...
I love Costner, there's a lot of good people on the cast, a few of them I've worked with before, nothing against any of them but it's just too much like f***ing 'Dallas' or something for me... too much sh*t. Too much of that for me."
Man, what a savage response, and not exactly a compliment for his buddy,
Taylor Sheridan, who he has called a "genius" more than a few times. He also said that
1883 one of the most incredible sets he's ever worked on.
You can't fault the guy for telling it like it is, though, right? Nothing like a straight shooter, eh? Honestly, he's probably a good friend to have when you're about to make some life changing decisions. Should I marry this girl? Should I buy this truck? Should I have another kid?
Even down to your fashion choices, he'll tell it like it is. He hated his hat from
1883 too:
"I had a hat on this f***ing show... a friend of mine who just passed a couple weeks ago, he started a costume company... and his take on the whole whole f***ing thing with westerns, he did John Wayne films forever is it all starts with the hat, and it does.
In a western the hat is part of that. And we didn’t get the f***ing hat until we got down there in Texas and it was a mistake because we got pushed into a box where we had to settle for a hat. And it was a f***ng hat that didn’t fit me. The f***in’ hat was too loose on me. It was a hat that just didn’t fit.
I remember talking to Taylor on the phone and he said 'we'll try a million hats on if we have to, you'll have the right hat, don't worry about.' And I got down there and it didn't happen. But I made it work, I just got into it and figured you know, Shea's got a f***ed up hat, that's all... not my favorite hat."
Of course, the next chapter of the Dutton saga, and the follow up to
1883, is set to premiere its second season soon on Paramount+ as well. Titled
1923, the shows stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton in a time that features the end of Prohibition, the beginning of the Great Depression, the emergence of deadly illness, and the construction of the modern-day Dutton Ranch.
There has been no announcement on Season 2, but we do know that production is underway and its expected to premiere sometime in the coming months.
Although, we're still not sure if Sam Elliott will watch it...
