Really hate to hear this.
Today, legendary NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre announced that he has recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. He revealed the news while testifying at a House hearing on welfare reform, which is related to Favre being linked to a 2020 scandal.
He was accused of misusing Mississippi's welfare funds to pay for a volleyball facility at University of Southern Mississippi and research on a concussion drug, which he invested in an effort to find a cure or remedy for football players, and others, who have suffered many concussions like he has over his many years playing college and professional football.
Favre has not been not been criminally charged in the welfare scandal and denies knowing that the millions of dollars in the form of a grant came from a welfare fund through the Mississippi Community Education Center.
He called the concussion issue a "cause dear to my heart":
"Sadly, I also lost an investment in a company that I believed was developing a breakthrough concussion drug I thought would help others.
I’m sure you’ll understand, while it’s too late for me because I’ve recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s, this is also a cause dear to my heart."
The 54-year-old has said before that he thinks he suffered "thousands" of concussions over his playing career, which included 20 seasons in the NFL, 16 of which were with the Green Bay Packers. Drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in 1991, Favre also briefly played for the Jets and Vikings at the end of his career.
Over 20 years, he
threw for 71,838 yards and 508 touchdowns (fourth all-time) and won one Super Bowl with the Packers in 1997. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016.
While some of the things he's been involved with since football haven't made great headlines, Favre is truly one of the all-time great NFL quarterbacks and hopefully he can continue to stay as healthy as possible while he battles this awful disease.
